CREST HILL — Today State Senator Michael E. Hastings and Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant welcomed the state’s decision to construct new correctional facilities in Crest Hill, describing the project as a smart, strategic investment that will save taxpayer dollars while strengthening public safety and creating jobs.
“This project represents a responsible and forward-thinking approach to modernizing our correctional system,” said Hastings (D-Frankfort). “By consolidating these facilities in Crest Hill, the state will achieve meaningful cost savings and operational efficiencies through shared resources and centralized services. This nearly $1 billion investment will not only deliver safer, more effective facilities focused on rehabilitation and re-entry, but it will also generate hundreds of construction jobs over the next five years and create long-term employment opportunities for our region. It’s the kind of smart infrastructure investment Illinois needs.”
The plan calls for building a new men’s correctional facility and relocating the Logan Correctional Center to the 2,200-acre Crest Hill site. The project will consolidate operations, allowing for shared infrastructure and greater efficiency across both facilities. Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant echoed the importance of the project for the region.
“I am pleased that the governor’s office has reaffirmed its commitment to Will County in rebuilding Stateville Correctional Center, as well as relocating the Logan Correctional Center to the 2,200 acre Crest Hill site,” said Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant. “The new facilities will prioritize safety and accessibility, with a focus on restorative practices. This project will additionally secure construction jobs for the next five years and long-term permanent employment opportunities, representing a significant investment in our growing region.”
The new facilities are expected to include modern housing, educational programming, medical and mental health services, and re-entry support. Construction is anticipated to take approximately five years.
